What Are the Requirements to Become an Uber Driver in Utah?
Uber's driver requirements in Utah start with age: at least 25. You also need a Utah driver's license and at least one year of licensed driving in the US. Lyft sets the same Utah minimum of 25 but does not ask for the year of experience here. Both run a criminal background check and a driving-record check, and the car you drive has to meet their vehicle rules. These are the platforms' published rules as of October 1, 2026, and they change, so check the linked pages before relying on them. Utah law itself sets the age floor at 18.
| Requirement | Uber | Lyft |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum age | 25 | 25 |
| License | Utah driver's license | Valid Utah license; temporary accepted |

What Disqualifies You From Driving for Uber or Lyft in Utah?
Utah law sets the bar for every rideshare company. Under Utah Code 13-51-107, Uber and Lyft cannot let you drive with more than three moving violations in the past three years, a conviction in the past seven years for DUI, fraud, a sexual offense, a felony involving a motor vehicle, property damage, theft, violence or terrorism, or a duty to register as a sex, kidnap or child-abuse offender. Lyft's own list adds any major violation in the past three years.
The same chapter puts registration on the company, not the driver (13-51-104), overrides city and county rideshare rules except at airports (13-51-109), treats drivers as independent contractors, and bars street hails and cash fares.
What Insurance Do Uber and Lyft Drivers Need in Utah?
Utah Code 13-51-108 sets two levels of primary coverage, each with personal injury protection and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage as the state insurance code requires.
| When | What applies |
|---|---|
| App off | Your own policy; Uber and Lyft say theirs does not apply |
| Logged in, waiting | Utah minimum: $50,000 per person and $100,000 per occurrence for injuries; $30,000 for property damage |
| Ride accepted until rider exits | Utah minimum: $1,000,000 liability per occurrence |
The driver, the company or both may carry it, and if the driver's coverage lapses, the company's applies from the first dollar. A personal auto policy may exclude rideshare use, and you must carry proof of coverage while driving. Uber and Lyft each describe what they carry. Atrium renters carry their own qualifying auto insurance that meets Utah minimums and upload proof.
What Are the Salt Lake City Airport Rules for Uber and Lyft Drivers?
As of October 1, 2026, the airport permit belongs to the company, and Salt Lake City International lists Uber and Lyft as licensed. Drivers wait only in the rideshare staging lot, for up to an hour, in first-in, first-out order, then pick up at the signed ground-level area. Uber requires its decal on the front passenger windshield and sets a 20-minute limit in its ExpressMatch lot; Lyft requires its emblem and uses columns 6B to 10B for pickups. The airport can ban drivers who break its rules. Lyft also serves Provo Municipal Airport, with pickups at Arrivals and no waiting after a drop-off.
What If You Don't Have a Car That Qualifies?
For many new drivers, the car is the hard part. Lyft's Utah sign-up asks for the vehicle's registration and insurance, Uber asks for vehicle insurance if you drive your own car, and each points renters to its own channel: Express Drive for Lyft, Vehicle Marketplace partners for Uber. The car rules, and what each platform says about other rentals, are on Uber and Lyft car requirements in Utah.
Atrium rents Teslas only to drivers who already have an active Uber or Lyft account. You also need to be 25 or older, with a valid license held for at least 3 continuous years, no license suspension, revocation or reckless-driving conviction in the past 3 years, no DUI or impaired-driving conviction in the past 5, and a credit card on file. There is no credit check; the $25 application fee covers Atrium's driving-record and background check. It is not a short-term rental: the minimum is 1 month, billed weekly, from $425 a week (see pricing, Uber car rental in Utah and rideshare car rental in Utah). If your Uber or Lyft account is not active yet, text (385) 204-4272 and ask before you apply.
